Matt and Kim and Donnis @ The Starlight Ballroom 10/24/2010

When looking at all the bands that were coming to Philadelphia in the summer, I noticed that Matt and Kim were coming to town. I love Matt and Kim; Simple and straight. The two originally met at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and have been playing music together since. When I listened to their debut album “Matt and Kim” I immediately fell in love. The upbeat feel brings a smile to my face any time that I feel down and makes me want to get up and dance. I really loved the tracks “Its a Fact (Printed Stained)“, “Yeah Yeah“, and “Grand”. I was equally impressed by their second album, Grand. Matt and Kim have a very energized feel to them, one that makes you want to get up and sing along. They play a wonderful blend of punk, pop, indie, and synth music.

Matt and Kim are awesome live. Before tonight, I had yet to see them in the flesh, but I had watched many videos on the internet. From what I saw, they played faster and with more energy than in their studio material, which is fast to begin with.

The venue had songs from Matt and Kim’s upcoming album, Sidewalks, playing in the background. I was told that I was only allowed to take photos from the floor, so I tried to find a good place to post myself. I ended up having to squeeze into the left side of the pit where I waited for the opening band to start.

GUEST POST: Group Love, Penguin Prison, and Two Door Cinema Club (by Ernest Haines)

Group Love, Penguin Prison, and Two Door Cinema Club @ The First Unitarian Church – 8/14/10
By Ernest Haines

It was 8:00 on a thursday night. I arrived at the First Unitarian church a few minutes early and the line to get in was already down the street despite it being a cold and rainy night. For those of you who don’t know, The First Unitarian Church is located at 2125 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA. Most people would not imagine that a church would host rock concerts, but the Unitarians are non-doctrinal and open-minded towards many things. Their Concert room is in the basement of one of the buildings and it was extremely small.

As the room filled up there was a wave of excitement going through the crowd. Everyone was waiting for the opening act Group Love to begin their set. Group Love is a Indie/Pop band based in LA, California. The band members all met when they were in a remote mountain village on Crete. A year later they started recording in LA. They have a very west cost indie sound to them in the best way possible. (check out their myspace)
